SMTP Reseller Module v5: New Features & Setup Guide

SMTP Reseller Module v5: New Features & Setup Guide

Everything resellers need to know about installing and configuring the redesigned SMTP Hosting client dashboard for WHMCS.

If you resell SMTP hosting services through WHMCS, your customers’ experience is your brand’s experience. Version 5 of the Smtphosting WHMCS module is a ground-up rebuild focused on one goal: giving your customers a client-area dashboard that looks professional, loads real data instantly, and helps them fix email deliverability problems on their own -without opening a support ticket.

In this guide, we’ll walk through what’s new, why it matters for your business, and exactly how to install or upgrade to v5.

Why This Update Matters for SMTP Resellers

Email deliverability is confusing for most end users. When a customer’s marketing emails start landing in spam, or their transactional emails fail to send, they don’t know whether the problem is DNS, authentication, or their sending limits – they just know something’s broken, and they open a ticket.

The v5 dashboard was built to answer those questions before the ticket gets opened, while giving you, the reseller, full control over how the dashboard looks and what it says – all without editing a single line of code.

What’s New in Version 5

1. Real-Time SMTP Usage & Sending Statistics

Customers can now see exactly how their account is performing at a glance:

  • Emails sent in the current hour, week, and month
  • Hourly sending limits and how close they are to reaching them
  • A visual breakdown of delivered, failed, deferred, and in-progress messages

This transparency reduces “is my email service working?” tickets and helps customers self-manage their sending volume.

2. Detailed Mail Sending History for Fast Troubleshooting

The new mail logs give customers (and your support team) a searchable, filterable history of every email sent through their account, filterable by delivery status (success, failure, deferred, in progress), with full technical details available per message for deeper troubleshooting. This alone can resolve a large share of “my email didn’t arrive” tickets without any reseller involvement.

3. Built-In DNS Health Checks

The dashboard automatically checks each customer’s SPF, DMARC, and DKIM records and shows:

  • Whether each record is correctly configured
  • The exact DNS record to add if something’s missing
  • A simple health score with plain-language guidance on what to fix next

This is one of the most common causes of poor email deliverability, and now customers can diagnose and fix it themselves.

4. Fully Customizable Branding, No Coding Required

This is the headline feature for resellers. A brand-new settings screen inside WHMCS lets you customize:

  • Colors | choose from built-in themes or fine-tune every color with a visual color picker
  • Wording | every label, button, and message shown to customers can be edited
  • Icons | pick from a built-in icon library for every section of the dashboard
  • Layout | control which sections appear and how the dashboard fits your existing WHMCS template

All changes save instantly and apply to your live client area, no file editing, no CSS knowledge, no developer needed. You can also revert your last change or reset everything back to default at any time, so experimenting is completely risk-free.

5. Mobile-Optimized Design

The entire dashboard, including mail logs and DNS tables, has been redesigned to work cleanly on phones and tablets, not just desktop browsers.

6. Improved Security

All communication between your WHMCS installation and your mail servers has been hardened, with stricter validation on every data request to keep customer data safe.

How to Download and Install the SMTP Hosting Module v5

Step 1: Download the Module

Log in to your reseller account and go to: 👉 https://my.smtphosting.com/download

Download the file listed as v5.

Step 2: Check Whether You’re Installing Fresh or Upgrading

⚠️ This matters, read carefully before proceeding.

Version 5 is a complete rebuild of the module, not an incremental update. The installation steps are different depending on your situation:

If this is your first time installing the SMTP Hosting module:

Simply extract the downloaded ZIP file into the root directory of your WHMCS installation. The files will automatically place themselves into the correct modules/addons and modules/servers directories.

If you’re upgrading from a previous version:

You must delete your existing module folder first, or the old and new files can conflict with each other and cause errors.

  1. Connect to your server via FTP or your hosting file manager
  2. Navigate to your WHMCS installation directory
  3. Delete the entire folder: /modules/servers/Smtphosting
  4. Extract the new v5 ZIP file into your WHMCS root directory
  5. Confirm the folder has been recreated with the new files

Step 3: Set Up Your Product

If you haven’t already configured an SMTP hosting product in WHMCS, follow WHMCS’s standard procedure for adding a new product and assigning the SMTP Hosting server module to it. If you already have a product configured from a previous version, no changes are needed here, it will automatically use the new v5 module logic.

⚠️ But make sure to edit an existing product > Module Settings and save it so the new module files are loaded.

Step 4: Activate and Configure the Settings Addon

  1. In your WHMCS admin area, go to Setup → Addon Modules
  2. Find Smtphosting Config Manager and click Activate
  3. Under Access Control, grant permission to the admin roles that should be able to manage dashboard settings
  4. Open the addon from your admin sidebar to start customizing colors, wording, icons, and layout

That’s it – no configuration files to edit, no server restarts required. Changes take effect immediately for every customer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any coding or design experience to use the new settings panel? No. Every setting is controlled through simple forms, dropdowns, and visual color pickers.

Will upgrading affect my existing customers’ data? No customer, billing, or service data is affected. This update only changes how the dashboard looks and functions, always back up your WHMCS installation before any major update as a general best practice.

What if I make a change I don’t like? Every settings page includes an Undo Last Save option, plus a Reset Everything to Default option if you want to start over completely.

Can I use different colors for different WHMCS templates? Yes, the branding settings support per-template color assignment.

Is the mail log data private to each customer? Yes. Each customer only ever sees logs and statistics for their own SMTP service.
